Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride is a mineral in many foods and likely, in your drinking water. Receiving small amounts of fluoride has been shown to dramatically decrease the chances of forming cavities by strengthening tooth enamel against acid attacks. It can also reverse early decay. That’s why, in children under 16 years of age, fluoride treatment is such an essential oral health treatment. Especially if children aren’t receiving a sufficient amount of fluoride from other sources.
The benefits of fluoride treatment are numerous. Fluoride treatment supports the development of permanent teeth and makes it more difficult for acids to attack and hurt both the teeth and the gum tissue. It forms an outer protective layer on the teeth. It can also inhibit the growth of oral bacteria that harm teeth. Professional fluoride treatments can also help to prevent tooth decay (also known as cavities or dental caries) and promote healthy tooth enamel.
Fluoride treatments like fluoride varnish or fluoride foam can be used during check-ups or cleaning appointments. If fluoride varnish is used, children can eat right away but should avoid very hot foods or carbonated drinks for the remainder of the day. If fluoride foam is used, children should not eat or drink for at least 30 minutes after treatment.
